Specimen submittal guidelines

When submitting specimens for hydration, there are a few things to keep in mind.

  • Each specimen should have a unique identifier, and be clearly labeled and bagged separately.
  • A packing list/catalog (digital or print) also helps us assure that we received what you sent.
  • If you are planning to XRF source small items, sourcing should be completed prior to hydration analysis.
  • We can prepare a slide from any piece. However, be aware that very small specimens might be completely consumed in the process.
  • If specimens are weathered or burned we might not find readable hydration. Call if you have this situation, and we can go over your options.

Be aware of your research questions when you submit. If you have specific areas on your specimens that you would like to have cut, let us know, and clearly mark those locations. Photocopying the items and drawing the cut locations generally works well.
